Clinical trials use human volunteers to research the effectiveness and safety of medications, treatments, or procedures. In a clinical trial, researchers administer specific interventions to patients over time and evaluate their responses, comparing them with those of standard medications or from a placebo to determine whether the new treatment is significantly better. Trials are carried out by principal investigators, who may be based in academic centers, or public or private institutions. Clinical trials are conducted in many countries around the world; large clinical trials involve patients from numerous countries.

Persons with mental illnesses may consider taking part in a clinical trial if they demonstrate no meaningful improvement after trying a variety of medications and treatments. They should discuss with their doctors whether entering a clinical trial is suggested.
